What Is Ball Screws?

ball screws (or ballscrew) is a mechanical linear actuator that efficiently converts rotational motion to linear motion. A threaded shaft acts as a precision screw by providing a helical raceway for ball bearings.

They can apply or endure large thrust loads while exhibiting little internal friction. They are built to close tolerances and are thus ideal for use in situations requiring great accuracy. The ball assembly serves as the nut, while the threaded shaft serves as the screw.

Ball screws are often larger than standard leadscrews due to the necessity for a system to recirculate the balls.

Ball Screw Applications

Ball screws are ideally suited to severe settings, such as high-performance machine tools, as well as highly delicate and sensitive applications, such as medical equipment.

Ball screws are typically used in applications that need the following elements:

  • Electric cars – the ball screw can replace a standard hydraulic system.
  • Wind turbines –Ball screws are used in wind turbines to control blade pitch and directional position.
  • Solar Panels –Ball screws assist in providing two or three axis motions in solar panels.
  • Hydro Electric Stations – Ball screws are used to regulate gates in hydroelectric power plants.
  • Motorised inspection tables – Motorised inspection tables will employ a ball screw within the mechanism to aid obtain the appropriate position of the tables for a specific application.
  • Lithography equipment –Ball screws are used in step photolithography processes to create nanoscale integrated circuits.
  • Automotive power steering systems – Ball screws are utilised in automated steering systems in automotive power steering systems.

Benefits Of Ball Screw Rolling

  • Improved mechanical properties
  • Superior surface finish
  • Very repeatable diameter and lead control
  • Fast cycle times
  • Reduced operating cost
  • No material waste

Ball forms of 0.062″ ball to 0.500″ have been efficiently whirled in this manner with a huge time savings when compared to grinding.whirling machines can offer an 8 to 10 times savings factor over thread grinding without any fear of surface cracking. Since whirling uses ideal cutting geometry, the material never reaches a critical temperature and stress does not enter the work. Screws that are whirled have excellent surface finishes down to Ra 8 microinches and are not visibly different to ground screws.

Ball Screws Production Machine

WhirlingMachine has created a one-of-a-kind process solution by integrating precise follower rests, a cost-effective resharpenable tool system, and high-speed whirling heads with stiff and accurate CNC driven machine tools. Long ball screws with bed lengths of up to 8m can be whirling to finish tolerances in a single pass in complete material. The follower rests on each side of the cut by gripping the final outer diameter in carbide “V” jaws, ensuring near-zero thread concentricity.
